Quickstart

Install OpenPets, choose a pet, enable useful plugins, and connect a local coding assistant when you want agent-driven reactions.

OpenPets works as a normal desktop companion first. You can install it, pick a pet, and use the official plugin catalog without connecting any AI tools.

1. Install the desktop app

Download the latest release from GitHub:

open https://github.com/alvinunreal/openpets/releases/latest

Choose the asset for your system:

Platform Asset
macOS Apple Silicon OpenPets-*-mac-arm64.dmg
macOS Intel OpenPets-*-mac-x64.dmg
Windows OpenPets-*-win-x64-setup.exe
Linux OpenPets-*-linux-x86_64.AppImage

See Install OpenPets for platform notes.

2. Launch OpenPets

When the app starts, a pet appears on your desktop and OpenPets adds a tray/menu bar icon. From there you can open the Control Center, switch pets, configure integrations, and manage plugins.

3. Pick or install a pet

Open the Control Center and go to the pet gallery. Pets are packaged assets with metadata, spritesheets, reactions, and optional speech. The current pet model is documented in Pets, and package details are in Pet format.

4. Enable official plugins

Open the Plugins section in the Control Center and enable the official plugins you want. OpenPets includes companion features such as focus sessions, reminders, mood check-ins, hydration nudges, virtual-pet state, launcher shortcuts, and small games.

Plugins are optional and permissioned. The host validates manifests, enforces permissions, owns rendering, and keeps plugin state/config separate from plugin code. See Plugin platform.

5. Connect a coding assistant

Agent integrations are optional. When connected, an assistant can make the pet react locally while work is happening. Prompts, code, paths, logs, and secrets are not shown in pet bubbles by default.

Use the CLI when you want project setup:

npx @open-pets/cli configure

For a generic MCP client, configure it to run:

npx @open-pets/cli mcp

See Agent integrations, MCP, and CLI for the details.

6. Check connectivity

If an integration is not reacting, first check whether the desktop app is reachable:

npx @open-pets/cli status

Then run the integration doctor:

npx @open-pets/cli doctor

More recovery paths are in Troubleshooting.
